Join us in creating community through gardening! A five month series of hands-on workshops covering everything the aspiring victory gardener/urban homesteader/locavore needs to know to begin, maintain and enjoy a home vegetable garden. This series of workshops is perfect for complete novices and beginning gardeners who are eager to gain some skills, and turn their thumbs a deeper shade of green.
Space is limited to 12 people, so please email us to reserve your space. The five month series begins in October and is $300, including a $50 materials fee. Reduced rates are available, please inquire.
All workshops will be held the Mid-City area of Los Angeles (Venice and Rimpau). Confirm your spot for the exact address. All workshops will be on the SECOND Saturday of the month and will start at 10:00 am.
October: Soil and Seeds
*Learn three different types of soil preparation. Experience the differences amongst sheet mulching, double digging, and simple soil amending. We’ll conduct a semi-scientific experiment over the course of the series to see which methods each of us prefer and which the plants prefer.
*Propagate winter vegetables from seed. Which vegetables do we direct sow (plant in the garden straight from seed) and which do we start in a more controlled environment (like a green house.)
This workshop will be longer than the others and you will get dirty. Please bring a lunch, water, gloves, and wear clothes and shoes appropriate for digging.
When: October 10th, 10am-5pm AND October 25th
November: Vegetables Have Friends Too
Companion Planting: Many vegetables, flowers and herbs form symbiotic relationships with each other making each plant more tasty and productive. Take part in planning where to plant what to maximize the “friendships” of all the plants in the garden.
Drip irrigation: Learn the basics of installing drip irrigation
When: November 14th, 10am-1pm
December: Learning to Share
*Learn and put into practice general garden maintenance and organic methods of pest control.
*Discuss ways of sharing your garden with coworkers and friends in gifts for the holiday season. Maybe we’ll have time for some crafting!
When: December 12, 10am-1pm
January: Decomposition is Hot
Learn about the processes of composting and vermiculture (worm powered compost). Help build an onsite compost and create a worm bin to take home with you.
Please bring a plastic bin (at least 18” by 24”) to class for your worm home. We’ll provide the worms!
When: January 9, 10am-1pm
February: Harvest Festival
After putting in so much work and paying special attention we get to enjoy the resulting bounty. Learn when and how to pick the fruits of our labor. Discuss saving and sharing surplus food. Share recipes featuring food grown at home. Finally take a look ahead and begin planning for the spring and summer season.
